Sean & Martha | Kelowna Wedding
Sean & Martha. Such a sweet, loving couple. You may remember this amazing couple from their winter Engagement Session! Now they are MARRIED!! This day was truly a remarkable one. So many Ukrainian rituals and traditions to count, making it a day full of excitement, sentiment and joy.
The first ritual was the “buy-out”, where the bride’s family blocked the path to the bride, then dressing the Groom up in colourful, symbolic clothing. In the tradition, the Groom with his Groomsmen come to Bride’s house and try to buy out his beloved. The Bride’s family and Bridesmaids in their turn put the price for the fiancée and the bidding begins. After two parties agree on price (it can be money, candies or champagne), the Groom and his company are asked to complete some tasks.
Once the Groom was deemed fit to marry, by the Bride’s family, he was allowed to seek his Bride, which is when the “first look” took place’; not part of the tradition, but made sense to coordinate as the Blessing Ceremony was next, prior to the wedding ceremony. The Blessing Ceremony is a ritual blessing of the Bride and Groom by their parents. Ceremonial words are recited, symbolizing forgiveness for any sins and a blessing of the marriage from the parents. Gifts are given to the Bride and Groom such as korovai (wedding bread), candles and icons. It is here that two families officially become one.
Many rituals continue throughout the Crowning Ceremony (the wedding ceremony), including the rings, the vows, the Rushnyk (embroidered cloth), the candles, the crowns, the common cup, the binding of the hands and the recessional. All elements of the ceremony are very symbolic and beautiful. Photographing each one was so rewarding!!
After the ceremony at the beautiful Ukrainian Catholic Church, here in Kelowna, we headed out for photos with the wedding party. Knox Mountain Park and Quail’s Gate Winery were stunning backdrops, before heading back to the Cove Lakeside Resort for more traditions and the reception. We whisked the couple away for a few evening photos after dinner; as we headed back, we were greeted by the sweet Kelsey, their beloved fur-baby. So of course, we had to sneak in a few photos.
The entire day was truly magical and perfect. Sean & Martha have an amazing love and it was truly an honor to be a part of this incredible day in their lives.
Congratulations you two!!
